Biography

Donald Atkins, M.D. is a Board-Certified surgeon who specializes in Neurosurgery. He received his medical education from the University of Georgetown School of Medicine in 1993 and has been practicing medicine for over 26 years.  Upon receiving his degree, Dr. Atkins received a prestigious internship from Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center, followed by residency training at the University of Tennessee Memphis, Semmes-Murphey Clinic. Following his residency, he continued on to serve four years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a Major and Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Brook Army Medical Center in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. It was during this experience that Dr. Atkins received his licensure. Dr. Atkins later achieved board certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2002, paving the way for him to join Neurosurgical Associates of San Antonio. He has been treating countless patients here since 2003.

In addition, Dr. Atkins has contributed to the educational benefit of medical students by acting as a Clinical Instructor at the Brooke Army Medical Center from 1999-2003, Kyphoplasty Training in 2005, Intradiscal Electrotherapy, and an International Course for Minimally Invasive Surgery. He is presently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, as well as a Minimal Access Technology instructor in Memphis.  Furthermore, Dr. Atkins has received numerous Special Training Certifications including Percutaneous Electrothermal Treatment of Diagnostic Pain, Gamma, Knife Surgery, and Kyphone Inflatable Bone Tamp Technology, as well as several Clinical Course Certifications. Dr. Donald Atkins has been featured in two publications and provided multiple medical presentations for the medical society.

Dr. Atkins enjoys living in San Antonio with his family. His background in military, medical, and surgical training has made him a prestigious and well-respected surgeon, and he continues to provide his patients with positive surgical outcomes.
